The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:

Plagiarism and the New MLA and APA Citation Styles

The Modern Language Association of America has published a new research paper style manual, the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th Edition, 2009). To add to the fun, the American Psychological Association has also produced a new publishing style manual, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Edition, 2010). Many of the changes in the new MLA and APA styles revolve around a concern over the fluid nature of online information and how people can retrieve it. It's an excellent opportunity to brainstorm techniques to assist students with the ethical use of information found in nontraditional sources.

This workshop will consist of two parts: first, an introduction to the MLA and APA citation style changes, including in-class practice for building new citations and a demonstration of the best ways to traverse student bibliographies and find their sources; and second, a brainstorming session to discuss instructing students on the ethical use of information, including the incorporation of in-class plagiarism discussions, techniques to spot plagiarism in student bibliographies, and options for heading off problems with the style changes in the classroom and the college.
